Welcome to Wellington Choral Society.
Our Concert of Remembrance took place at St John the Baptist Church, Wellington on Saturday 24 November, and the Mayor, Cllr Gary James, the Deputy Mayor and their consorts attended.
WCS was honouring the memory of lives sacrificed and the wounded, both physically and mentally, over the past 100 years of human combat through poetry, organ music and choral singing. The concert ended with Maurice Duruflé's Requiem which is based on the old tradition of plainsong and is generally regarded as a masterpiece.
Cllr James thanked the Society for inviting him and his wife Bee, adding: "A very moving and thoughtful concert, in true respect for the Fallen, not only of 100 years ago but for all of our service personnel who have paid the ultimate sacrifice on our behalf!"
There was a retiring collection for SSAFA Somerset, the Armed Forces Charity. Pauline Homeshaw, for SSAFA, announced that the total of £417.25 given "will stay in Somerset and go directly towards welfare work with those service and ex-service people who struggle with lives of all sorts ... We are all very grateful indeed."
Christmas at the Wellesley
WCS took part in this local Christmas concert at the Wellesley, along with other groups and societies, singing two carols from the programme the Society will sing at the 'Sing for Somerset' Carol Service in Wells Cathedral on 15th December.
